I recommend this one but it's not quite what I am looking for.

Most of the fighting involved striking but there is grappling in it although there is also nonsense such as pinching nerves out of the neck as a technique and some techniques and Martial Arts that have a supernatural element. A long the way Baki gets involved in underground Martial Arts tournaments with dangerous Martial Artists. The closest I have seen is Baki the Grappler which is about a boy trying to surpass his evil father who is the best Martial Artist in the world. Also no weapons, just hand-to-hand combat. I want to see an anime like that but with Martial Arts as the theme. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. They sensationalize Boxing in that anime but the anime is grounded in reality with fight scenes that are flashy and exciting but stay true to the essence of Boxing. Basically I am looking for the anime equivalent of Hajime no Ippo, an anime about a kid that becomes a professional Boxer. I want to see an anime about Martial Arts or MMA that portrays hand-to-hand combat in a realistic way and has a decent amount of episodes.

The popular anime is broken down into three seasons and three TV specials, each with many years between them. By serious I mean no fantasy or supernatural elements. Based on a manga (Japanese comic book) that has been running since late 1989 and is still going strong, Hajime no Ippo has a lot of material to animate. After looking through the collection of anime I have watched it occurred to me that I don't know of any long running series that focused on a serious portrayal of Martial Arts and certainly none about MMA.
